This Berkeley home with a lovely guest cottage in back was the ugliest house on the street. A bungalow that had a bad  2nd story addition with no thought for style or flow. We gutted the home and and with some thoughtful space planning, made the addition make sense as a master suite upstairs. We reversed the staircase, making the 2nd story master access more approachable from the main great room. Then took the closed off formal dining room and converted it to a laundry room. We removed a wall in the back third of the home to create a larger kitchen and dining room (great room) with a family room off to the side in a space hat was unusable before.

The cabinets are a light French Gray with white quartz counter and a brick back splash and dark wood floors, giving to kitchen an edgy loft feel.  We kept the bungalow door and windows as well as the trim, but upgraded all the other surfaces and finishes throughout to achieve the Berkeley bohemian vibe while keeping it open and airy throughout.

The cottage in the back was where we had some fun with its exterior surface detail using reclaimed cedar siding and corrugated metal as accents on the siding and awnings.  the cottage kitchen has floating plumbers pipe shelves, gray cabinets and black brick back splash and all stainless appliances.
